Saving Screen from the Scrap Yard

How do we hold the soil in and let the water out of our second hand crates?

Our burlap idea was great – but short lived. We realized that burlap breaks down…and then we’d be left with a muddy mess on the deck after time. Plus, we’d not yet found a source for ‘used’ burlap.

Idea #2: Screen!

We hit up the local screen/metal companies and Voila! They happened to have a whole box that was headed to the scrap yard. We diverted it, cut it into squares, lined our crates and now it holds the soil that will soon grow plants.

53 steps up – a few strong legs — and countless buckets.

Our yard of soil makes it to the roof.
Thanks to Mark from Stable Cafe and Emily from boxwood olive — our empty crates now have some filling and our garden will soon grow!
